Research recently published by the Virginia Tech University reveals some alarming things about the damage we can do to ourselves mentally and physically when our work ‘life’ starts to take over our personal life. Not only does this cause problems in terms of our own health and well-being but it can also have a detrimental effect on our most important relationships. Findings like this provide an ideal opportunity for us all to take a step back and ask ourselves some tough questions such as;
‘Should we just accept this?’
‘Are there things that we can do differently that positively benefit us all?’
The researchers at Virginia Tech make some really good suggestions as to how employers and employees can work together to improve the culture they work in. I think that’s brilliant and hope that people will take up these ideas in their workplaces.
There are of course things we can do to help ourselves as well. Practising mindfulness and relaxation techniques are a great way to improve your well-being and only need a little bit of time every day to make a difference.
